French TDs - My Thoughts and Reviews
French TDs are generally fast and brittle as their tier progresses up the tech tree. In the current meta, French TDs are extremely disregarded and looked down upon by many people because of their pathetic gun selection, gun handling, nonstrategic weak spot layout, and prone to crew deaths. French TDs have great terrain grip and was never known to slip down hills or drift. I will review them one by one starting from tier 7. (Who cares about Tier 6 nowadays? (True Fact) )
Tier 7 - AMX AC 46
An unusual gun layout and narrow disoriented gun arc distribution on both left and right sides. With a poor choice of guns with increasingly worse gun handling, it fails hard even if it is the highest tier in the team. Poor armour layout with extremely obvious weak spots sitting on top of the tank that creates a visibility checkpoint for the enemy LTs to spot it more easily when you are hiding behind a slope. Even the blindest tankers will notice these hideous weak spots. Although you have -10 degrees of gun depression, the tank is elegantly showing it's weak spots even before you are approaching the end of the slope. The gunner tends to die every time when the tank is hit at the front and the commander will die when the round weak spot on the roof is hit. Having decent speed and mobility won't help you run effectively because of it's tall profile and poor camouflage. Exposed and obvious ammo racks are large and black, immensely decorated around the side of the tank will take hits every battle. Till today no one has been consistent at playing it well, explaining why there are only 13 people in the world who have 3 marks on the AMX AC 46 although the 3 marks target damage for AMX AC 46 is laughably one of the lowest of all Tier 7 tanks. Argued by many players as the worst Tier 7 TD in WoT, which I too agree. An extremely fit pick for the masochists.
Tier 8 - AMX AC 48
At least having more gun arc and normal gun arcs compared to the AMX AC 46. But it is traded with worse gun depression, a longer chassis and an additional weak spot which is located at the back of the tank. The tank has 2 gunners, and both of them will die when the weak spot behind the tank and the T-shaped weak spot gets damaged. Prepare a funeral for the commander if the round weak spot gets hit. Another funeral will be prepared for the loader if the side of the tank gets hit. Basically AMX AC 48 is a live coffin and prepare yourself spending money on 2 first-aid-kits. But it is better if that live coffin stayed alive with 3 dead crew members rather than being dead with no dead crew members, so prepare 2 repair kits because the tracks are large and the long body with the only purpose of storing additional ammo racks that tend to get hit when you are running sideways from the enemy. Coupled with poor aiming time and poor gun handling, the gun bloom is the size of a full moon and it takes forever to aim. By the time the tank turns and aims at a target, it will take at least 5 seconds to aim and the enemy would have been undetected by the time you have finished aiming. Mobility is similar to the AMX AC 46 but it still have problems running away from enemies. Camouflage is poor and be prepared to be spotted after shooting from behind a bush. There are many more people having 3 marks on the AMX AC 48 than on the AMX AC 46. Some people argue that it the AMX AC 48 is a decent TD, but the majority and I believe that the AMX AC 48 is one of the worst tier 8 TDs. A great pick for the masochists.
Tier 9 - AMX 50 Foch
Don't the French people learn from their mistakes? It is the exact same tank with the exact same gun as the AMX AC 48 with 1 less gunner and with slightly improved frontal armour and without the additional weak spot behind the tank, also sharing the same flaws with the AMX AC 48. Although Foch has the same hull traverse speed as AMX AC 48, the Foch feels slightly more sluggish and slower. The French TDs get more aggressive at tier 9, now it can brawl with many HTs and MTs up front but it can't hold the brawl for too long. With better aiming time and shooting on the move accuracy, the gun is made for close-quarter brawling and sniping. However, having no gun upgrades to heighten the poor base DPM makes it the worst tier 9 TD. Tier 9 TDs having similar guns like Conway and SU-122-54 have much better DPM. The round weak spot is more rounded and slightly smaller than on the AMX AC 48, but it is still easily hit from far distances. Foch was one of the many TDs that was voted by the WoT community to receive a significant buff, but WG never proposed Foch's buff. The perfect masochist pick for 3 marks, after several updates on the 3 marks spreadsheet it is estimated that there are only less than 20 people in the world who have 3 marks on the Foch.
